CD-Tip

by Steve Maus

Today I’ve got a CD-tip for you – quite unusual I admit, but worth a try.

Itzhak Perlman
Concertos from my Childhood
EMI Classics
1999

He plays

Rieding Violin Concerto in B minor, op.35
Seitz Concerto No. 2, op.13
Accolay Concerto No. 1 in A minor
Bériot Scène de Ballet op.100
Viotti Concerto No. 22 in A minor

Itzhak Perlman, violin
The Juilliard Orchestra
conducted by
Lawrence Foster

There are several interesting things on this CD.
First of all – it’s great that an internationally renowned soloist isn’t limited to music like Brahms, Beethoven and Sibelius. Perlman gives us the chance to listen to pieces from Rieding and Seitz like we never heard them before. Usually we are used to hear them in music schools or during private lessons in a quality far from being perfect.
Perlman plays the Rieding Concerto with the original fingering. He never leaves the first position and shows us how great this music can be if it’s played well, with his incredible vibrato and intonation.

If you are learning to play the violin this CD is a great opportunity to see (and hear) how fascinating this instrument can be, even if you play the less difficult peaces.

I really recommend this CD!
